Lync – Add user error: Filter failed to return unique result

Many of us saw the following error when we add user on Lync Server using Lync Control Panel or Powershell:

Filter failed to return unique result, “[SipAddress : sip:email@domain.com] [LineURI : tel:+15555555555] [PrivateLine : tel:+15555555555] “

I created the following commands and they always help me to find the conflicting number.  Just replace the number 15555555555 with the number that I you want to use and run the following commands.

Get-CsUser | where {$_.LineURI -eq “tel:+15555555555” -or $_.PrivateLine -eq “tel:+15555555555“} | Sort-Object LineURI | Select-Object Displayname, LineURI, PrivateLine

Get-CsCommonAreaPhone | where {$_.LineURI -eq “tel:+15555555555“} | Sort-Object LineURI | Select-Object Identity, LineURI, DisplayNumber, DisplayName, Description

Get-CsRgsWorkflow | where {$_.LineURI -eq “tel:+15555555555“} | Sort-Object LineURI | Select-Object Name, Identity, LineURI, DisplayNumber, Description

Get-CsExUmContact | where {$_.LineURI -eq “tel:+15555555555“} | Sort-Object LineURI | Select-Object identity, LineURI

NOTE: When you copy and paste above commands, make sure that you have correct double quotes “.

In addition to above, you can download the script and use it for your convenience: http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Find-conflicting-number-in-93173dcf
